When I bought this app, I could retrieve my license using my email account.
Then the dev switched it to use Google Play.
I would like to request the original method of activation.

I don't want anything to do with Google play.

It is actually still tied to your email account, but you need Google Play Services installed for it to recognize that. This hasn't changed =)
