OK, having a deeper look, looks like the issue is caused by the following lines in my nginx site config:

if ($request_method !~ ^(GET|HEAD|POST)$) {
return 444;

I've modified this to:

if ($request_method !~ ^(GET|HEAD|POST|DELETE|PUT)$) {

and all seems to work as expected now.
